What is microblading – is it worth it?

So is having your eyebrows microbladed something you’ve been thinking about? Microblading is a very ontrend topic at the moment, and with good reason! I recently took the plunge and had my eyebrows microbladed and am excited to share with you how it went!

Okay so if your eyebrows look anything like mine did, then you know the struggle. I’ve been colouring them in everyday for years, and sometimes a girl just wants her brows to look natural and on fleek when she wakes up in the morning. Is that too much to ask? This is where microblading comes in. Microblading makes your brows look natural, realistic and styled. Honestly, it doesn’t have that “tatooed eyebrows” look at all. Most people think my eyebrows are natural and when I tell them they’ve been microbladed they are amazed because they say it looks so much like real hair strokes!

I had mine done at Vogue Lashes and Brows with Janneke. Vogue quite possibly have the most gorgeous decor out there. Seriously I almost wish I lived there (No kidding – I was tempted by the faux fur throw!)

What is microblading?

6D Microblading (also known as hair stroke brows, microstroking and micro pigmentation) is a type of permanent makeup and is a fairly new technique in beauty. It’s done using an ultra thin blade and  the natural pigment is deposited into the upper dermal layer of the skin. The blade is actually a grouping of extremely fine needles affixed to a handle to manually create clean and crisp lines that resemble eyebrow hairs. It’s semi-permanent and will last for 1-2 years, depending on your skin type and lifestyle.

Microblading is really good for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill-in over plucked brows.

Is microblading painful?

To ease the pain Janneke uses a numbing cream before the procedure as well as a topical anaesthetic during the procedure.  It was painful but in my opinion bearable. The pain started to get better after the first few strokes. To be honest for me the worst was the sound – I can’t explain it but just the sound of it cutting into your skin was strange!

I do feel the need to tell you to go to the right person / salon. Because it’s very on trend at the moment, a lot of people are offering it. Make sure to go to someone properly trained otherwise the results might not come out how you were expecting!

How long does microblading take?

The first session takes about 1,5 hours. The first hour they draw the shape and that’s the longest part and the most important step. The reason why it is so important is because this is where they are drawing a shape perfect for your facial frame. The touch up (About 6 weeks later) is quick – about twenty minutes.

Would I do it again?

Definitely! I personally felt it was worth every dime I spent. Honestly I L O V E waking up with brows that are ready for work when I get out of bed (Wish I could say the same for the rest of my face!) Janneke is really excellent and I can highly recommend her. You can tell that everyone at Vogue Brows and Lashes is passionate about what they do, the environment and atmosphere is so professional and makes you wish you worked there! I’d highly recommend them if you’re thinking of having it done- they have salons all over South Africa and frequently run amazing specials!
