Avon has been around a while, and I bet there’s not one South African lady who hasn’t gleefully flipped through their thick, glossy brochures handed to you from a friend. Whether you’re loyal to the brand or have tried a few products over the years, I think most women have had an experience with the brand at some point or another. Over the years, I’ve tried a few Avon products myself (They had a mascara I was crazy about, it was yellow but can’t remember the name!) and have always loved the quality they put into their products for a great price point. But I haven’t tried any of their products in years! So, when I received the Avon True Color Flawless Liquid Foundation I was excited to put it to the test. Does this newbie on the block hold it’s own against some other leading drugstore foundy’s?
Now if you’ve been following my blog for a while you know I like high coverage. I have seen huge improvements to my skin since incorporating a proper skincare routine, but I’ve always had ‘problem skin’ ranging from hormonal breakouts, pigmentation and the like. So for me, if a foundation is deemed good it needs to stay on for a good couple of hours. I’m not saying from dusk till dawn (Although that would be nice!) but just holding reasonably in tact throughout the day.
The Product: Avon True Color Flawless Liquid Foundation
The Avon True Color Flawless Liquid Foundation comes in a pump glass bottle. Avon describes it as: “an oil free high coverage foundation with exclusive patent-pending technology with skin-matching pigments that soften light from every angle for perfectly invisible coverage and a flawless finish.” It promises full coverage that feels light and natural, and that doesn’t settle into your pores later on in the day.
- Oil-free
- Dermatologist tested
- Suitable for all skin types
- SPF15
- Invisiblend Technology ensures skin matching and invisible coverage
- Won’t settle into pores as it wears
A high coverage formula
My first impression of the formula was that it felt very thick but still felt light and almost mousse like in it’s texture. When you apply it, it feels light on the skin. It’s very pigmented and one can definately see immediately that it has high coverage! Straight away it gave my skin an even appearance – covering up pigmentation, old acne scars and discolouring to reveal flawless skin.
I think the reason why a lot of people shy away from high coverage foundations (And if you don’t need them, then you’re lucky!) is because they are worried that they will feel heavy on the skin. And also, look cakey! Now, that is the worst I know! BUT, not every high coverage foundation feels heavy and I think Avon have formulated this product really well because it feels very light.
Applying the foundation
I’ve applied the foundation using various techniques, but I’ve found the best way was with a foundation brush or just your fingers. Usually I use a beauty blender or duo fibre brush but I didn’t see as good results as with the foundation brush!
My impressions
Firstly, I immediately noticed how light the product felt on my skin, yet it still gave me the full coverage I was after. It’s also oil free and very hydrating. I checked my skin throughout the day, it hadn’t rubbed off, it didn’t look cakey or dried out which is always a GREAT sign (Is there anything worse than seeing yourself in the rearview mirror and getting that shock!). What was especially impressive about this is that I’m trying it in winter – a time when your skin is typically drier and foundations maybe don’t look as nice.
I also have some rosacea on my cheeks so often I have that redness creeping through. I’m happy to say I didn’t see any of that creeping through until MUCH later in the day (maybe 5/6pm) when I was wearing the Avon True Color Flawless Liquid Foundation.
Shade Ranges
As always, in South Africa we are always more limited when it comes to shade options. There are 11 shades available for this foundation in South Africa. Most of them are suited to medium to deep skin tones, which I am thrilled to see. We need to see more brands doing this in South Africa!
I wear the shade “Nude” which is the second lightest shade they have on offer. So maybe they are lacking a little in the “porcelain” shades for the super pale ladies. But all in all, I think they’ve done really well when it comes to the shade range!
Product Details
The product is SPF 15 and comes in a 30ml pump glass bottle. It retails for R154.90. Remember with Avon you need to purchase it through a local representative, which you can search for here.
So…
I think over the years many younger people (me included) might have grown apart from them, thinking of them as an older brand. But this product just proves that Avon is modern, innovative and here to stay. AND easy on your wallet too. It’s a win-win situation! Does it replace my beloved Double Wear? No, but it’s totally fab and a product I’ll definitely reach for.
Disclaimer: I was sent these products from Avon to test and review, with no promise of a positive review. All views are my own.
Great review! I agree…the thought it that it’s for older women, though mind you..>I am an ‘older woman’ myself now….lol. Looks like a great foundation.
