So, which makeup remover is best? – My top picks!

If there’s one piece of advice we see continually in magazines, Beauty adverts and anti aging campaigns it’s that sleeping with your makeup on is a major no-no. Now, while I absolutely love makeup and all things beauty, I know I still have so much to learn when it comes to skincare. As a lady in my 20s I know that what I do (or don’t do) now will impact how my Skin ages with time. I still have a lot to learn in knowledge when it comes to serums, eye creams and peels but the one thing I do religiously when it comes to my skin is remove my makeup. But the big question is which makeup remover is best? There is a myriad of choices and types! Thought I’d review some of my top picks for you guys today.

Which makeup remover is best? The struggle is real!

1. The “all-rounder” – Nivea Perfect and Radiant Micellar Water.

This product I have loved since the first time I used it! When this bottle is empty (getting close) I will definitely repurchase it. Micellar waters are trending at the moment, and it’s for good reason. I find this one is really soft of my skin, removes makeup really easily and doesn’t leave my skin feeling dry or tight. (I actually wrote a detailed article on this product if you’d like to read it here.)

For me Micellar Waters are your best friend on those nights that you come home late and need to take your makeup off quickly. It works very quickly using cotton wool pads and costs R89,95 from Dischem. Did I mention it is 400ml?! When it comes to which makeup remover is best for your budget, this one is it! This will definitely not break the bank but still doesn’t compromise on quality!

2. Environ Pre Cleansing Oil

R170 for 100ml

Okay so once I stumbled upon the Dermalogica Pre Cleanser and I was immediately in love! However it costs a pretty penny ($$$) so I have embarked on finding more affordable alternatives. One brand that makes a fantastic cleansing oil is Six Sensational Skincare ( a local brand too! Read more here) but recently I found an even more affordable option. Environ. Environ is a globally recognised and loved Professional Skin Care brand. Vitamin A is a cornerstone of the brand and they use it in their products. The Environ Original Pre-Cleanser dissolves excess oil, impurities and make-up because it contains mineral oil. At the same time it also helps to decongest clogged pores and hydrate skin, leaving it feeling clean and refreshed. It is also gentle on the skin so suitable for daily use. So for me, when it comes to which makeup remover is best for ladies who wear high coverage foundation, precleansing oils are a fantastic option.

Pre-cleansing oils are great for ladies like me who wear high coverage foundation!

I think a lot of people are very nervous of using anything oil based on their skin of fear that it will make it oily and cause breakouts but research has showed that it is actually very nourishing for the skin. I find the cleansing oils work fantastic when you are wearing very heavy / waterproof makeup. Any mascara that is tough to get off? This is the product for you!

You need to rub the oil on your dry face, rub around a bit and then only wash your face with warm water (it’s like it melts the makeup). Then rub some cotton wool pads on your face. Afterwards I often like to wash my face afterwards just so it doesn’t feel too oily

3. For the sensitive eyes (And stubborn makeup!) Clarins Instant Eye Makeup Remover

This Clarins instant makeup remover removes waterproof mascara like a bomb!

R340 for 125ml

The Clarins Instant Eye Make-Up Remover is a bi-phase makeup remover. It works instantly to lift away every pretty much every last trace of make-up, including long-wearing and waterproof formulas. The product is enriched with rose and cornflower waters which work to moisturise and soothe the skin and ultra-fine oils which have a softening effect and enhance the cleanser ability. This ultra-effective instant make-up remover lotion leaves skin clean and perfectly radiant.  It’s actually suitable for people who wear contact lenses, as well as those with very sensitive skin!

It contains:

  • Chamomile extract: soothing and relaxing.
  • Organic cornflower water: calming and softening.
  • Organic rose water: soothing, refreshing, hydrating.

4. Dual Purpose splurge purchase- Estee Lauder Advanced Night Micro Cleansing Foam

R560 for R100ml

This airy foam based product removes makeup, purifies the skin and also rids your skin from the days pollution. It has a very soft formula that foams as you use it. The product has little microbeads that purify and revitalise! It is specially formulated to purify deep within the skins surface.

Absolutely LOVE the smell of this product (Smells expensive ;)) and also my skin feels incredibly soft after using it and doesn’t feel tight (Which one finds with a lot of cleansing products). Which makeup remover is best often comes down to skin type as well, and this one is pretty much suitable for all types!

Good for: Most skin types (including oily, dry, sensitive, combination)
