As a beauty fanatic (and ultimately a beauty blogger) you’re constantly buying and trying new products. You’ve seen / done / heard of it all. So when a brand comes along that blows you out the water, you sit up and take notice. And that’s pretty much what happened the first time I encountered Biomedical Emporium and it’s founder, Dr Judey. Not only is this brand proudly South African, Dr. Judey is a total #girlboss and is a real force to be reckoned with!

A trip to Biomedical Emporium – my first experience with microneedling

I’m going to start by talking a little bit about the treatment I had done which was the Gold Standard Microneedling. The Gold Standard Microneedling is one of their signature treatments and it well loved amongst their clientele. The reason I want to focus on this is because never in my life had my skin looked as good as it did a few days after I went for this treatment.

The funny thing is, Dr. Judey was in town to do procedures on my birthday – so I had it done on my 27th birthday! Unfortunately that meant I spent the rest of the day red in the face but who cares!? 

This was the first time I had ever had microneedling so I expected it to take really long and be super painful. Everyone who works at Biomedical Emporium is extremely knowledgeable and comfortable with the treatments. They walked me through the whole process, explaining each step to me (Which I really loved). The treatment was actually pretty quick (About fifteen minutes) and wasn’t nearly as sore as I expected!

What is the purpose of microneedling?

The purpose of microneedling is to stimulate the synthesis and contraction of collagen and elastin fibres in your skin by means of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT).Typically, the microneedling protocol is performed with fractionated Hyaluronic Acid and Retinoic Acid for an immediate collagen contraction and enhancehment of the skin tensile strength.

How did my skin look afterwards?

Not going to lie – my skin was pretty red at first! However, this is totally normal! And, within about fifteen to twenty minutes it had calmed down a lot and looked presentable. (Remember, it was my birthday so I was stuck with a red face all day)- and post microneedling care is really important so I didn’t want to put any products / makeup near my face! Bare-faced / natural look on my birthday for me 😀

Yes, my skin was a little red and flakey for a few days afterwards. But let me tell you – I have never received more compliments in my life about my skin than I did in the next few weeks after. People were constantly asking what products I had used because they were just amazed! The results truly spoke for themselves and after that I was able to truly understand and believe in the power of microneedling for better skin.

Why does the face look red?

With microneedling, as each fine needle punctures the skin, it creates a channel or micro-wound. The micro injuries trigger the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing new collagen and elastin in the papillary dermis. In addition, new capillaries are formed.
